Last night President Obama mentioned climate change promising strong action. Let us hope he follows through – and that he isn’t blocked by naysayers.
“…Over the past eight years, the United States has reduced our total carbon pollution more than any other nation on Earth. But we have to act with more urgency – because a changing climate is already harming western communities struggling with drought, and coastal cities dealing with floods. That’s why I directed my administration to work with states, utilities, and others to set new standards on the amount of carbon pollution our power plants are allowed to dump into the air…”
It’s so hot today. I’ve had a ton of stuff to do, but I just had to do this post on TMV. It sort of relates to the theme of the Big Belch too. Or at least I think so. Stay cool.
I’ve been hearing news reports about the heat wave in the eastern states and the enormous suffering people are going through without electricity from the storms that hit the area a week ago. Can you imagine? Day after day with no air-conditioning, no lights, being roasted by unending heat. I just have to say: Geez Louise, why aren’t people getting off the grid in droves now if they possibly can?
The technology is there to do it. Heck, in hot weather, with certain currently available home solar equipment, you could even make money from power companies while you’re sitting in lovely coolness!
And you know these blackouts will happen again and again and again, whether it’s caused by summer thunderstorms, ice storms taking down lines in the winter, too much draw on the grid, some tiny foul up that takes out the whole Eastern Seaboard. I believe I remember that a squirrel accidently touching a transformer did that once years ago.
It’s happened before. It will happen again. People say the only sure things in life are death and taxes. Well, I beg to differ. One has to add power outages.
And that doesn’t even take into consideration terrorism!
I tell you, if I were able to, I’d spend just about anything to get off the grid — at least to the extent of keeping my AC and frig operating no matter what — rather than subject myself to the horror folks are going through in Virginia right now.
PS – It’s been thing after thing to do Right Away! that I haven’t even looked at the Big Belch since my last post. Phooey.
My last post I reflected on our dog-eat-dog world. Later in the week I did a study/portrait of Francois, the best lover of a French bulldog in existence, from the graphic novel The Big Belch. And I realized that I’d slandered dogs. I don’t think they’re anywhere near as rude as our politics have gotten. Sorry Francois.
Just reflecting on the failed Walker recall effort. The way this country is heading is just nuts. For the life of me I can’t see the sense in devolving into such a dog-eat-dog world. Nastiness rules. I hope all you who are reading this are doing well and aren’t getting bitten.
I heard that last night. And it really struck me. That’s what it is. Fox is a shill for the GOP instead of news.
This is not to say the others – ABC, CBS, NBC, do a good job of reporting the news, but at least they make a stab at trying to present a fair picture.
Oh, and I suppose folks will say huh – I thought this blog was about art. It is. Just sometimes things really gripe me. I expect you’ve got your own gripes. Maybe about an artist who blathers on about politics.
